TCPALM: Letter: When the lake discharges stop, our water returns to green from black

People around Lake Okeechobee are convinced that the polluted water we suffer every year in Martin County from Lake O discharges is caused by 1) the faulty septic systems north of Lake O; and 2) the faulty septic systems that are present in Martin County.

Lake O residents, please consider these facts.

It takes about six weeks for the black waters of Stuart to return to the beautiful light “ Bahama green “ waters after the discharges stop. Why? The only change is the stoppage of the fresh water from Lake O into our salt water. The septic tank issue in Martin County apparently corrects itself immediately when the discharges stop? And when the discharges stop and all the faulty septic systems' water from the north stays in Lake O … why doesn’t your lake water turn black like ours does from that same bad septic system water?
