The algal blooms now covering some 200 square miles of Lake Okeechobee are proof that thereโ€™s nothing like a crisis to get politicians saying the right things.

Itโ€™s good to see, for example, Florida Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio make a bipartisan pitch to immediately vote on a federal water bill that would help pay for repairs to the leaky Herbert Hoover Dike surrounding Lake O.

Itโ€™s good to see Gov. Rick Scott proposing to put money in next yearโ€™s budget to reduce the use of septic systems and seeking a federal disaster declaration.
