A strange thing happened in Tallahassee on Wednesday.
A politician who is heavily backed by the sugar industry and other big-business groups — Matt Caldwell, R-North Fort Myers — pitched a bill that claims to shore up money for buying conservation land in Florida.
That wasn't the odd part.
The surprise came in the form of the people who spoke in favor of Caldwell's bill, which proposes big changes to the state land-buying program Florida Forever (Proposed Committee Bill 18-02 of the Government Accountability Committee).
Public-land advocates supported it:
Will Abberger of the Florida Trust for Public Land praised it as "a really important step forward."
