FT. MYERS BEACH OBSERVER: “It's like Armageddon out here:” red tide causes large fish kill near Boca Grande

* Update: As of press time, red tide was not present in central Lee County. Since press time, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released a new red tide forecast for Monday, July 2 through Thursday, July 5, predicting Northern and Central Lee County will experience moderate red tide levels on the Gulf.

Fishing Captain Rhett Morris ticks off the species he's watched floating dead in the Gulf of Mexico: snook. tarpon, Goliath grouper, black drum, Spanish mackerel, cobia, and a 10-foot manatee.

"It's like Armageddon out here," said Morris, a captain for Beyond Borders Outfitters in Punta Gorda.
